Design Trends & Tips - Wallcovering as Art

Wallcovering as Art
Add depth, texture and artistic prints

Everyone wants a great piece of art on the wall. They stir up all sorts of emotions in your friends and get them asking questions.

Can’t nail down that perfect picture? Why not choose decadent wallpaper? It’ll have your guests complimenting not just what’s on your wall, but the wall itself.

Some people may be scared off by wallpaper, inundated with ideas of tacky, plastic-looking floral patterns and primary-colored stripes, but some of the freshest trends in wallcoverings can be a great component to decorating your home.

"We all remember the wallpaper growing up that we learned to hate," said Paul Montgomery, owner of Paul Montgomery Studios, maker of hand-painted wallcoverings, adding "But now, there are a lot of patterns that do enhance an interior. Wallcoverings can uplift and inspire and bring a sense of peace and tranquility to a room."

To separate out trend from instant classic, StyleChicago.com researched modern takes on elegant designs for today’s wallcoverings.

Design with Texture

There are many different papers to choose from that will give your room a sense of design.

"Wallcoverings are about adding texture and depth to a space,” said Allison Kettlewell, director of product development for Donghia Textiles, and added "Even the most subtle texture or pattern can add depth and warmth that paint cannot."

Donghia’s Maestro Walls collection is the perfect choice for someone who wants a simple and smart design. Featuring yarn-dyed linen from calm greens to steely bluish-grays, this collection of papers has the feeling of canvas that creates a luxurious, upholstered look when applied.

Donghia’s Look A Likes collection offers a bright and natural take on basic wallcoverings, with each style mimicking something from nature, like bamboo or palm. The moment guests walk into this paradise, they’ll feel warm and enveloped in a tropical Eden (and they’ll tell their friends about it).

Traditional Looks

The hand-painted papers from Paul Montgomery Studio provide a romantic solution for those who want individualized wallcoverings depicting chinoiserie or rich, garden vistas.

"The room becomes the artwork," said Montgomery and added "The chinoiserie and scenics preclude the use of any oil paintings."

Most panels come together to create murals, and look great against white or natural wood molding. To avoid a cluttered look, be sure the wallpapered room is simply decorated with minimalist furniture and a few decorative items.

Expert Tip #2

If you have a large room, choose a small, subtle pattern to keep it from becoming too overwhelming.

Go Graphic with Artistic Prints

For those looking for a modern alternative to the traditional look, Surface View offers a unique option. This British company specializes in high-resolution recreations, giving you the option of having wall-sized photograph in your home.

Like comic book-style beach scenes? What about a vintage Porsche? These very images could be the backdrop to your modern kitchen or minimalist living room.

"Wallcoverings are a cost-effective way to get large-scale art on your walls," said Surface View co-owner Wayne Hemingway. "Paint is boring and technology is allowing the concept of wallcoverings to be pushed even further."
