Beauty Trends & Tips - Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous

Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous
by Esther Blum

At some point we all wish life was as luxurious as shows like "Sex in the City" and until the book Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous arrived, that fabulous lifestyle seemed too distant to grasp.

In this book Esther Blum unlocks the secrets for all of us; demystifying the how-tos of having our cake and eating it too.

A registered dietitian, certified dietitian-nutritionist and nutrition specialist, Blum has captured a complete collection of everything you wish your mom would have taught you about how to Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous.

As promised in the first chapter, this is not a just some diet or supplement book. It’s not even close. Instead, the helpful thoughts and, at times, blunt advice helps to stimulate steps toward a more luxurious self.

Blum will gently guide you toward and reveal how to live the fabulous life, from what to have to eat on a dinner date to curing hangovers. This book will make you wonder how you ever managed to get by before you read it.

StyleChicago found some terrific tips to get your body in top condition for date night, or any other day for that matter. Wow your man with soft, beautiful skin and nails. Try these tips taken from Chapter 5, Vitamin G: Gorgeous Supplements.

Dry Skin

Supplements:
Evening primrose oil – 3,000mg per day
Omega-3s – 2,000 mg per day

Nutritional Approaches:
Add flaxseed oil liberally to salads to act as an internal moisturizer. Make sure you bathe in warm, not hot, water so you don’t overdry your skin. Keep coconut or olive oil in a spray bottle and apply it to damp skin after a shower. These oils are rich in natural emollients and will lock in moisture. A good rule of thumb is that if you won’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin! Also make sure to get you thyroid checked out; dry skin can be assign of an underactive thyroid. Use a humidifier (or even a pan of water placed near a radiator) to humidify your environment, especially in winter. This helps to reduce the amount of moisture lost from the skin through evaporation.

Brittle Nails

Supplements:
MSM – 1,000 mg three times per day
Calcium 1,000 mg per day
Magnesium 400-800 mg per day
Horsetail 1 teaspoon of liquid extract (2.5 g from Equisetum arvense herb) diluted in water or juice

Nutritional Approaches:
Nails are composed of protein, so make sure you eat enough protein each day, as well as fatty acids and calcium-rich foods. To pamper your nails, try rubbing olive oil or coconut oil into the cuticle and nail bed each night. If you have vertical ridges or dark lines down the nails, get your thyroid checked. If you have toenail fungus, try putting tea oil directly on top of the nails and under the nail bed. Last but not least, take a break from using nail polish every now and than. Long-term nail polish use can cause dry, brittle nails. Go for the sexy look of naked nails while allowing them to come up for air.

If a big night out includes a stop at a fabulous restaurant, take some advise found in Chapter 2, Eating Gorgeous, to help you chose a guilt-free meal.

Eating Right on Date Night

Keep in mind that this info doesn’t just apply to date nights. These guidelines work whenever you find yourself in a restaurant.

  • Figure out how hungry you are before you start eating
  • Look over the menu and figure out what appeals to you
  • Order a meal that has some protein in it.
  • Order foods the way you want them cooked
  • If low-carb eating is your bag, then send the bread basket back
  • Make sure you get some fat in your meal as well.

It’s happened to the best of us: It’s bed time and you realize you may have slightly over indulged on Pinot Noir. No worries. StyleChicago found advice on how to prevent that morning-after headache in Chapter 3, Drinking Gorgeous.

Before Bed, Try This:

  • When you get home after a night of drinking, drink plenty of water before you go to bed. This will prevent dehydration, which accompanies many hangovers.
  • If you can remember, take 150 mg if milk thistle and 250 mg of schisandra
  • Also take 1,000 mg of N-acetyl cysteine and 500 mg of vitamin C
  • Take two 1,000 mg capsules of everything primrose oil, too.
