Fall 2009 Fashion Trends
Re-inventing the 80's, embellishing the present

The '80s are back in full force this fall season with embellishments ranging from studs and zippers to leather and acid-wash.

StyleChicago.com recently caught up with Laura Schara, fashion director at Macy’s, to get her take on the most promising fall 2009 trends. Get a sneak peek at all the fashion trends on the runway at Macy's Glamorama 2009.

Trend #1: Embellishments

Accessorizing has always been an important part of any outfit. It has the ability to add glam to any outfit. Thankfully, this upcoming fall's trends are making this task much easier. How so? Many of the articles of clothing available this fall have been accessorized for you.

Flashy embellishments are making their way back into the fashion scene. Studs and zippers have begun to take over clothing everywhere with one thing in mind: style.

The best way to embrace this reincarnated fashion trend is to leave any worries behind, and jump in. Embellishments can be as present as the fashionista wants them to be. From a jacket full of zippers to a pair of black heels with metal studs, embellishments allow the fashionista to choose just how mush she wants to adorn her look.

If you're nervous about jumping back into the '80s, snag a pair of heels and couple them with your favorite pair of skinny jeans. This is a simple and economical way to stay hip and up to date with this fall’s embellishment trend.

Trend #2: Leather

Leather has always been a major player in the fashion world. Representative of luxury, this smooth material dominates shoes, handbags and various clothing items. This upcoming season is no exception to the above statement.

Dresses, pants and handbags will be sporting leather and, quite frankly, you should be too. Leather is everywhere. The best thing about this material is that it is easily accessorized. Full of glam on its own, leather dominated ensembles don’t need all that much to make them look stylish.

Fall 2009 is taking a classic material and bringing it back to the head of the fashion world. The frontrunner? Marc Jacobs. His vast understanding of the versatility of leather helps to make each piece unique, an important part of fashion pieces.

Trend #3: New Denim Washes

Shed your dark side and embrace the light; acid wash is back! Worry not, we aren’t talking about the AC Slater acid wash jeans with gathered ankles. This season’s lighter wash jeans will still be sleek and stylish, but will have more of an edge than the jeans we all sported throughout the summer months.

The lighter wash isn't all that's changing in the denim realm. This season, designers want you to have attitude from head to toe. Destroyed jeans with a lighter wash are a sure way to show that you are ready to take on whatever curveballs fall might throw your way. Dodge them in style.

Luckily, the skinny jean cut that we have all come to know and love has chosen to stick around for the fall. This slimming cut helps to create a straight line from your hips down, which extends the leg and removes any excess material.

The return of the skinny jean means that you no longer have to worry about falling out of love with your favorite pair of jeans. Embrace the skinny jean and liven it up with a lighter wash or flashy embellishments.

Trend #4: Broad Shoulders

Yet another bookmarked page in the '80s fashion catalog is the strong presence of clothing that enhanced the shoulder area. Broad shouldered clothing items are making a comeback this fall for both men and women alike. This fall's fashions are daring you to go bold and flashy.

Suits, blouses, jackets and outerwear for men and women will be featuring a broad shoulder as a part of the cut. The wider shoulder helps to make the waist appear slimmer and gives any look an edge.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between an article of clothing with broad shoulders, versus one that has shoulder pads.

The broad, bold shoulders are not here to shorten the length of your neck. They are here to spice up your ensemble and add a pinch of attitude. Accompanied by skinny jeans and a stylish pair of shoes, a broad shouldered blazer will certainly catch the eye of fashionistas everywhere.
